R.I.P. Freedom: July 4, 1776-March 21, 2010


Last night at the bar, a customer asked if we could put C-SPAN on as the Obamarxcare vote was set to start soon. The fact that we are a sports bar would usually discourage such requests, but we complied with the customer's wishes.

A myriad of people from all socio-economic groups of the American landscape watched intensely as the vote began. I stopped my work doing the weekly beer and liquor inventory to join my fellow Americans in watching freedom slip away.

As the votes started coming in, the chatter started. The majority of people sharing a moment in history were pulling for freedom to once again prevail. Of course, you had your few jagoffs applauding as liberty took its last breath, and there were also the "Who-gives-a-f***" people. A few more drinks, and things would've gotten ugly. I wasn't in the mood to break up a fight; I was in mourning.

The final tally appeared, and those who danced on the grave of freedom quickly finished their drinks and left. The rhetoric as they left was laced with the sarcastic rantings about finally defeating the policies of those mean Republicans. Yes, the entitlement crowd likes to stop at the bar for a few.

I went back to doing my inventory with a heavy heart and little concentration. I had just witnessed the symbolic burning of my beloved Constitution. I questioned whether the Founding Fathers were crying. They were. And their sacrifices and hard work were all for naught last night. I was ashamed of what this country has become.

I pray that a Constitutional challenge is filed posthumously on behalf of the victim here: freedom. It's going to be a long, hard challenge to resurrect freedom once again, but, just like the mythical Phoenix, liberty will rise from the ashes once again. For the sake of future generations, it has to.

One thing you can count on, though. Those who are celebrating today will make sure they're standing there with a fire hose to extinguish the rise of the Phoenix.

It's time to make our stand, folks.

The American Worker ID Card: Beware This, Folks!!


Maybe I'm the only one who sees a problem with this, but I think it's worth covering from the perspective of personal liberty.

According to foxnews.com, the Senate is busy crafting an immigration plan that would require all workers in the U.S. to carry an ID card with embedded information (including fingerprints). Anyone else see the potential for governmental abuse should this come to fruition? And people thought the Patriot Act was horrific.

The bill is being sponsored by Chucky Schumer (D-NY) and RINO extraordinaire Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and faces a tough battle in the Senate. In an interview, Schmucky Schumer made the following statement:

"It's the nub of solving the immigration dilemma politically speaking," Schumer said in an interview. The card, he said, would directly answer concerns that after legislation is signed, another wave of illegal immigrants would arrive. "If you say they can't get a job when they come here, you'll stop it."

That's right. Hand over your personal information to the government wonks, and the illegal immigration problem will vanish into thin air. What a moron!

"It is fundamentally a massive invasion of people's privacy," said Chris Calabrese, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union. "We're not only talking about fingerprinting every American, treating ordinary Americans like criminals in order to work. We're also talking about a card that would quickly spread from work to voting to travel to pretty much every aspect of American life that requires identification."

Now, there are issues that I couldn't disagree more with the ACLU, but this ain't one of them. They see the potential for abuse just as plain as day. If this goes through, folks, we are nothing more than avatars in the government version of the Sims. They'll control our lives in ways never dreamed of by the Founding Fathers. And all in the name of curbing illegal immigration.

I've got a boffo idea. How about militarizing our borders??? Or putting a double fence along the border with surplus land mines in between? It worked in Berlin for many years! THAT'S what we should be doing. Instead, Schumer and Graham feel the need to curb our personal liberties once again to seem compassionate to those who violate our laws.

Dear reader, this is another attempt to inject government even further into our everyday lives. I urge all of you to stay informed on this matter and let your representatives in Congress know that you will NOT stand for this erosion of liberty. The freedom you enjoy today could be gone tomorrow if Schumer and Graham have their way.

Oh, The People You Meet In a Bar....A Guest Post From a Customer



Friday night, I was (as usual) working my butt off at the bar. Business was hopping, and we were doing everything humanly possible to keep up. Not an easy task for someone of my age. Not that I'm old or anything...

Before chaos became the night's standard, an older gentleman walked in. We informed him that he could seat himself anywhere and that one of us would be with him very soon.

Before heading for a barstool, this kindly soul and I struck up a short conversation. As it turns out, he is a brother freedom fighter and fellow patriot. We briefly talked about Scott Brown and other conservative points before duty called me away.

When I got a chance, I was able to go over and talk some more. We exchanged cards, and he was gracious enough to show me that he had the cell phone number of Dr. Orly Taitz, the attorney pushing for Obama to produce his official birth certificate. I gotta say I was impressed!

A few days later, I saw where the gentleman, whose name is Bill Steiner, had emailed me. He complimented me on my site, and I saw where he had sent me an essay he had written. It's a beautifully-written piece, so I thought I'd share it with you.

A Great Victory! But don’t Blink, America, Please Don’t Blink!

YES! The 2nd American Revolution has begun in earnest!!!

Those 1.5 million of us who were having Tea in Washington D.C. on 9/11/09 knew that without question.

Scott Brown or someone else would eventually win a resounding victory against a key figure representing the anti-American onslaught we are currently experiencing, as decent patriotic citizens predictably rise to defend their liberties, their families and themselves from obvious tyranny and certain future despotism, at the hands of those who now navigate our ship of fate.

To have such an opposition-crushing event occur in Massachusetts is certainly cause for immense joy and celebration, but we must not lose sight of where we are and what possibly lies closely ahead.

A simple look at both recent past history and the history of the world, not only permits us our momentary jubilation, but also fires bright flares signaling our underlying, long developing cultural/structural societal distortions and weaknesses. That look also warns of potential peril especially in the months ahead.

Given the ALL-IN nature of the commitments and positions of the opposition accompanied by their wholesale, reckless law breaking and multiple treasonous assaults on our Constitution; must we not look most closely at the exceptionally well-planned and well-executed strategy to radically change our way of life and the reasons for doing so. We must be particularly amazed by not only how obviously long it was in the making, but also how carefully and precisely it was done...and will be done, if not thwarted.

With Scott Brown’s victory, the questions shouting most loudly are, “Is this the beginning of the end? OR “Is the end of the beginning?”

Our destiny lies in the correct answer.

Can the opposition allow a legitimate 2010 election to become reality and with it a full, complete and utter disconfirmation of their philosophy, their worth, and the certain curtailment of their ability to continue their clever, pathological manipulation of facts, truth, the Constitution and the rest of us, which has been their blueprint?

In this context, we must look at two paradigms having radically different outcomes and requiring radically different thinking and action plans to successfully address them in order to allow our Republic to survive and prosper:

  • The “Politics as Usual” Model (PAUM)
  • The Marxist/Jihadi Model (MJM)

We must determine which model is valid for our present circumstance.

Considerations & Questions:

The “Politics as Usual” Model (PAUM) - Scott Brown wins. Many others like him win.

Conservatism sweeps the midterm elections and responsible, mature, and patriotic adults are returned to power.

These new conservatives will be forced to work diligently on crash overtime schedules to repair the enormous damages done to so many aspects of our economy, intelligence community, political system, international relations and the battle against the global Muslim terrorist onslaught; hoping the work can be completed in time to avert major catastrophes.

To do their work properly they will find is necessary to address an immense educational campaign to assure that sufficient numbers of our citizenry understand the American Way.

They will have an imperative to tell many suppressed/forgotten truths repeatedly, widely and often in order to dispel the numbers of consequential and deliberate lies long promoted by the opposition, which have gone largely unchallenged. For they know that a misinformed electorate cannot make accurate decisions. They will know, also, that the survival of our Republic rests in our children and grandchildren who must be presented a correct American history with all its implications so that our future may be secured. The Constitution, Bill of Rights and historical role and utility of the Ten Commandments and their attendant heroes must be resurrected and honored as standards for social behaviors.

They address many major tasks...

  • To return to Constitutional law and order.
  • To identify crimes and try criminals, so that transgressions are fully exposed and addressed.
  • To assure national security and public safety.
  • To assure our military full support, best equipment and loyal, trustworthy American leadership.
  • To assure captured enemy combatants are properly detained, humanely interrogated and tried by military authority.
  • To regain a reasonably strong and defendable international position.
  • To return to normal political and economic cycles.
  • To achieve energy independence
  • To assure each individual citizen maximum freedom to pursue his dreams and goals and a means to protect themselves and their families.

They look to a process of encouraging the third world to join with us in the realizing the benefits of free enterprise capitalism and all that it brings with its voluntarily lower birth rates, more individual sophistication and better decision-making through education.

They press the world to realize that free enterprise capitalism based democratic republics rarely make initial aggressive attacks other free enterprise capitalism based democratic republics because they both know they have far too much to lose in doing so.

PAUM assumes that the opposition are Americans and that they have the best interests and outcomes of our Republic in mind, while disagreeing about how to achieve their ends and what the Republic will resemble after their work is finished. In PAUM, different emphases are stressed as the pendulum shifts back and forth. In PAUM, extra Constitutional excursions are corrected by the well-maintained balance of power between the Three Branches of Government as we stumble on.

If, on the other hand, we find ourselves in The Marxist/Jihadi Model (MJM); we are in very deep trouble, primarily because we accustomed to PAUM and tend to stay there. The MJM alternative is far too politically incorrect and far too painful for consideration even by many fellow conservatives in the media.

Did we begin heading for MJM with Woodrow Wilson?

Did the proponents of MJM show themselves to Senator Joe McCarthy and then more vigorously in the 1960’s?

Has the true nature of MJM fully manifest itself in the last 367 days?

If we stay in PAUM, while MJM is actually in service; what might be our destiny?

We will know soon which model applies.

We will know by the types and levels of trump which are played and by the positions taken by the opposition.

We will know by the by the nature and intensity of transpiring events.

Do we navigate successfully through the forth coming gestation period anticipating our hopeful rebirth in November 2010?

OR

Do we find ourselves...

In burgeoning economic chaos, our dollar worthless, our free enterprise system hopelessly compromised?

Experiencing more terror attacks cleverly conceived and ignominiously ignored or excused?

Graciously affording our dedicated terrorist enemies the rights and protections reserved only to American citizens?

On the road to national healthcare we do not want or need?

Bailing out every supplicating political ally?

Victims of an international global warming conspiracy, now fully exposed as a hoax for personal and political gain.

Criminally taxed into oblivion because we breathe and successfully and efficiently produce goods and services?

Ruled in part by the hands of a Czarist oligarchy of questionable repute, loyalty and authority?

Bearing the burden three more years of an administration of questionable legitimacy and birthright?

Knowing crippling civil disorder and attendant misery as malevolent forces act in concert in our days of weakness.

Discovering our Republic, a shattered egg, non-repairable and lost forever and with it the free world?

Can the opposition afford, allow or even imagine legitimate 2010 elections?

We will have many of these answers in just about nine months. Hopefully, mother and baby will do well.

I Have a Dream...


In 1787, a group of brave men came forward to establish a country that has never been equaled in the history of the world. Their dream is now mine and will be entrusted to my children when I am but dust in the ground.

The footsteps of the patriots will forever echo in the hearts of the freedom fighters; it is our impetus to fight for the cause of liberty. To silence those footsteps is to stop the march of freedom. We have a sacred duty to continue the march and keep the dream alive.

I have a dream.

I have a dream that all citizens of this great nation will be free. Enslaved by fear of ever-expanding government and political correctness, the shackles of those who love liberty will be broken by a return to the dreams of our forefathers.

I have a dream.

I have a dream that one day all citizens will not be judged by their ideologies. Those who espouse the principles of those who sacrificed all to establish the freest nation on the planet are often labeled as "extremists" or "right-wing terrorists." Judgment should be reserved for God to mete out.

I have a dream.

I have a dream that one day all citizens will earn the fruits of this great nation. With freedom comes great responsibility to respect one's uniqueness in this world. There are those in this society who feel entitled to the prosperity of another, and, as free human beings, we must not stand for the theft by government to give to the idle and irresponsible. The slaves of the system have defined "entitlement" for far too long. Liberty dies a slow death under these circumstances.

I have a dream.

I have a dream that one day all citizens will be employed based on their merits and not on the color of their skin. To hire based on a quota system sends the message "You aren't able to excel on your merit." Excellence knows no skin color. It is, in essence, what makes this country great.

I have a dream.

I have a dream that one day all Americans, both Liberal and Conservative, will share the same vision of limited government and personal liberty tempered with responsibility. It is the dream of our ancestors. It is what many gave their lives for.

We are on the verge of the New American Revolution, and, poised on the brink of repeating the victories our forefathers celebrated in giving birth to this great land, we have to ask ourselves whether we will join with the angels in Heaven in the song of bygone eras.

"Free at last, free at last, Thank God Almighty....free at last!"

What's the Worst That Could Happen?


Now that we are officially in the beginnings of an election year, the Democrats are hyperventilating over abysmal poll numbers. Approval ratings for their beloved messiah have tanked, and many Democratic politicians are in danger of losing their jobs as the American people continue to voice their concerns over the slow encroachment of government into their personal lives.

In November, all seats of the House of Representatives and approximately half of the Senate seats are up for grabs. Pelosi, Reid, Specter, and many other Dems are going to spend the majority of their time until then interviewing for their jobs in the media, trying to convince Americans that they are best-suited for the position.

The question of the day for Americans who may be mulling over their political ideologies is simple. What's the worst that can happen if we elect a fiscally-conservative, constitutionally-savvy Congress? Let's see...
  1. The ultimate death of socialized medicine in this country
  2. Americans keeping more of their own money in the form of tax cuts or, possibly, tax cuts for businesses (large and small) that eventually help individuals prosper. Reagan and JFK were both supply-siders.
  3. A movement back to the ideals set forth in the Constitution by the Founding Fathers
  4. A push to secure this nation and its borders. Gee...we didn't hear of underwear bombers between 2001 and 2008. Wonder why?
  5. A sense of personal responsibility and personal liberty
  6. A government whose representatives remember just who is in charge. WE THE PEOPLE!
  7. Returning to a time when it wasn't politically incorrect to invoke the name of Jesus Christ or say that America is the greatest nation in the history of mankind
  8. A renewed respect for our fighting forces and the sacrifices they make
  9. A sense of charity among the private sector to care for the elderly, disabled, and needy. That is NOT the job of those in government.
  10. Blessing of this country from God. "Blessed is the Nation Whose God is the Lord." -- Psalm 33:12
Consider all the events that have transpired over the past year. Now ask yourself "How many of these ten items have been brought to fruition by the current administration?" [B & G Warning: Don't blow a blood vessel trying to think of one let alone ten.]

Now that it's been pondered, I ask one last question: What's the worst that can happen?

Freedom



Say it. "Freedom." The word itself has the power to move mountains and inspire greatness. Never before in the history of this great country has the danger of losing that power been more real than in today's world.

We have witnessed the gradual erosion of freedom, and the struggle will continue. Just as with the ebb and flow of the ocean, liberty has fluctuated in varying degrees. In the name of social justice, our God-given right to our personal sovereignty has slowly been encroached upon. Death by a thousand slices, if you will.

Freedom commands us to recognize the great responsibility that comes with such power. Not to be taken lightly, we are to protect it, nurture it, and bestow it upon the next generation. We must also instill the recognition of freedom's responsibility within our children. To not do so is negligent and reckless on our part. Freedom's power is too great to not teach the responsibility that goes with it.

Freedom is the one true trait that has separated the great from the enslaved. Free people thinking free thoughts and given the liberty to pursue those dreams have broken the physical and ideological chains that have oppressed people around the world. Millions have given their lives so that others may enjoy the fruits of their own labor. They were free to make that decision for themselves and not by government fiat.

Freedom does not give one license to deviate from civility. Only in a society where freedom is tempered with responsibility is there true peace. Freedom without responsibility is anarchy. Where there is no freedom, there is no peace. Peace is the result of freedom and civility. Forced peace without the freedom of the people is tyranny.

Liberty in and of itself is not a guarantee against war. It is because of war that freedom has survived strife and the imposition of government force upon the people. It must be protected at all costs. As easily as liberty is frittered away in the name of political correctness, it is equally as hard to retrieve it.

Evil is borne in the hearts of those who fear the power of a free population. That same population has sacrificed much over the generations in order that all people are released from the tyrannical whims of the power-hungry. Beware the person who dictates that it is our sacred duty to cede freedom for the good of the whole. This is the person who fears freedom the most and wishes that no one wields the awesome power of liberty.

Freedom. It is what we believe in. It is who we are. And it is sacred.

Send It On


The Disney Channel has become a staple of viewing in our house thanks (or not) to Cheyenne. While I'm not a huge fan of Disney since their politicizing of movies, I can deal with it. Hey, it keeps the little diva from becoming a whiny mess.

Recently, a group of Disney Channel stars recorded a song titled "Send It On" under the name "Disney Friends for Change." Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana), Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), Demi Lovato (Sonny With a Chance), and the Jonas Brothers (Nick, Joe, and Kevin) have come together to do the song, and I must say that while not a classic in the sense of Clapton's "Layla" (the original; not unplugged), it's not bad.

While the message being sent is geared to kids doing their part to conserve resources, the lyrics could just as easily be a message of inspiration for adults (especially us bloggers) to keep up the fight against an ever-growing government and the erosion of liberty. The lyrics I find most pertinent to our cause will be in bold.

A Letter to the Left


Dear Lefties:

In recent days, there has been much said about those of us in America who disagree with you on Obamacare. While that is only one issue we disagree on, conservatives and libertarians are being painted as an unruly, out-of-control mob. Do you really know who we are?

We are supporters of the Constitution. We believe in free speech for all, including you. Respectful and intelligent debate is what matters to us. We may not agree with what you say, but we will defend with our dying breath your right to say it. Can you say the same thing?

We believe in and encourage religion. We do not believe in the establishment of a state religion, but we believe that our Founding Fathers based the principles of this nation in religion for a reason: To make the statement that our rights descend from God, not man. We don't care what religion you are, but we don't want you telling us that we can't espouse our faith whether it be in city hall or in the schools. That leads to the establishment of atheism as the state religion.

We believe in the sanctity of innocent life. I make the distinction because while supporting the rights of the unborn, I believe the dregs of society who commit unspeakable acts forfeit their rights. It's the basic biblical principle of "An eye for an eye..." Using the death penalty while opposing abortion puts a value on human life. Why does your side support abortion? Do you realize the cure for cancer or AIDS may have been aborted?

We believe the government should play an extremely limited role in our lives. The role of government is not to take care of us from cradle to grave; that is the role of free people. We do not believe the government should be stealing from Americans every pay to fund their programs that are stuffed full of corruption and abuse.

We believe that we should not be told what kind of car to drive or how much water our toilet should hold. The free market should determine that. While we do believe in being good stewards of the earth, we also believe that God gave us precious gifts for our use. To abuse those gifts or to place the earth above all else further decreases the value of human life.

We do not see skin color. Despite the picture that has been painted lately, we believe in equality among all races. We abhor supremacy and separatism; those ideas are counter to what the Founders intended. Why do you have a double standard on race? Average Americans protesting encroaching fascism are racist in your book, but Reverend Wright and the Black Panthers aren't? It makes no sense; wrong is colorblind.

We come from all walks of life. We are your neighbors, your doctors, your policemen, and a myriad of other people you encounter every day. We will gladly interact with you, but don't expect us to sit back quietly while the Constitution is trampled on.

One if by Land


During the Revolutionary War, the signal of "One if by land; two if by sea" was used to let the Freedom Fighters know from which route the British were coming. Lanterns hung in the Old North Church in Boston spread the message.

In recent months, the seeds of revolution have started to take root. We are facing an enemy from within who has no regard for the sacred document bestowing equal rights on every American from the billionaire to the homeless person on the street.

My suggestion is simple. Since we know that the enemy is coming by land via Washington DC, why not put a single light near the busiest thoroughfare near you. I plan on buying a $4 solar light from Wal-Mart and putting it on the hillside near my driveway. I live on the main artery that leads directly to a ski resort. If you live in the city, get one and put it near the front of your house or on the lawn's edge near the sidewalk. For those of you in apartments, a single light-bulb candle in one window will do.

Consider it a symbolic message to let people know that the enemy is coming by land.

LANCASTER, N.H. — There's no escaping the long arm of big government — even here at the far edge of a state whose license plate decrees that without freedom from oppressive authority you might as well choose death.

But for a group of about 500 in a tent colony here, the Porcupine Freedom Festival is about as close to Libertarian Nirvana as they're likely to get.

Held in June, the four days are about beer, burgers and bonfires. But more importantly, participants aim to carve out an enclave of less government and more liberty to do as they wish.

They aim to show a lost nation the way back to its political roots.

It hasn't been an easy message to sell these past few years. Their group, the Free State Project, has struggled to attract followers. But now, with Americans thinking anew about the reach and role of government, Free Staters see at least the hint of an opening.

So on festival weekend, they drink to the future. Between swigs of a custom brew called Overregulated Ale, they ridicule the Federal Reserve, applaud the defeat of a bill that would have required the wearing of seat belts, bemoan higher taxes and restrictions on gun rights.

"We said bad things are going to happen and they happen," Jason Sorens, a political science professor, preaching to the crowd clustered around picnic tables. "We say, we told you so."

Flapping overhead, on lines between spruce trees where others might dry bathing suits, Free Staters fly the Gadsden flag, with its serpent and warning to government: "Don't Tread on Me."

They circle around one activist's PT Cruiser to test tactics for dealing with government's front-line troops. "How will you perform when confronted by the police?" the schedule of events for the session asks. "You'll know once you practice."

Dozens walk through Porc Fest with handguns hanging from their waists, an unexpected sight on the way to mini-golf.

The threat of overreaching government is not new, Free Staters say, but it is rising. They wonder if more Americans aren't starting to realize that, too — before it's too late.

Last fall's protests against the economic bailout has been followed by public disapproval of the Obama's administration takeover of General Motors. In 36 states, legislators have introduced resolutions declaring their sovereignty over matters including the right to bear arms, citing the Constitution's 10th Amendment, which delineates the federal government's powers. Free Staters approve — though they are distrustful of most politicians.

Still, they are convinced the country will eventually recognize the truth. Just have a look, says Free Stater William Domenico, pointing to 18 fresh recruits from Florida, North Carolina and beyond, piling off a bus after a day's tour.

"Why?" asks Domenico, himself a refugee from an over-licensed life in Colorado. "Because they want government off their backs."

Americans' faith in government ebbs and flows, with voters giving Washington more rope during times of crisis. Even then, though, uncertainty lingers.

"Underneath it all, there is a suspicion of government doing too much," says Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of the Gallup Poll, which has long tracked public opinion on the matter. "That's a general strain of American culture."

Dislike of big government goes all the way back to colonists fed up with an English king, and a Constitution written to keep power in check.

The Civil War and the Great Depression shifted the balance, asserting the expanded power of federal government.

"None of these powers were ever formally given to these people (government officials) and so occasionally, whenever people notice that the federal government is behaving this way, they get really outraged by it," said Kevin R.C. Gutzman, a constitutional scholar at Western Connecticut State University.

After World War II, broad political consensus saw most Americans willing to follow Washington's lead, says Marc Hetherington, a Vanderbilt University professor and expert on public trust in government. But wariness soon returned, though not nearly to the extent hoped for by some advocates of less government.

"If we do not carve out a sphere of freedom now, freedom will be lost for a long time to come," Sorens, then a Yale University doctoral student, wrote in July of 2001.

He and a few like-minded thinkers met over bagels in Asheville, N.C., and devised a plan. They called upon hardcore activists to move to a small state and do everything possible to take over and scale back government.

The timing of their pitch couldn't have been much worse.

Weeks after the Free State Project started, Al Qaeda terrorists flew jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The attacks, two wars and two recessions over the past eight years unsettled U.S. voters' attitudes toward government.

In the fall of 2001, for the first and only time since Gallup began asking the question, the number of Americans who said they wanted government to do more reached 50 percent.

"After 9/11 we had a hard time," says Sorens, now a professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo. "We had some people quit because they said they didn't want to become part of a secession movement, even though we weren't."

Free Staters pushed ahead, choosing as their destination New Hampshire, whose voters have a hard-earned reputation for political independence. They set out to recruit 20,000 activists by 2006 to sign a pledge to move within five years.

Some of the most spirited moved immediately, but recruitment lagged. The group now has 9,400 participants. About 450 have moved to New Hampshire, joining 250 already there.

The small band of Free Staters in New Hampshire has been trying both conventional and more novel strategies to curtail it government's role.

A number have run for office. Four have won seats in the 400-member state House of Representatives, the largest in the country. Free State activists have campaigned furiously against measures perceived as emblematic of excessive government, like a mandatory seatbelt bill and budget hikes.

Meanwhile, a group of mostly younger Free Staters have decided the best way to keep government in its place is to needle it, through small acts of civil disobedience.

Then, at June's end, they pack Roger's Campground to breathe deeply of mountain air, camaraderie and a life away from government.

The weekend is a big party. But it is also a statement, based on sober thinking and often rooted in personal experience.

Pamela Ean's misgivings about government were confirmed at work. A high school teacher, Ean was frustrated trying to meet the testing standards set by the federal No Child Left Behind law. She calls it an illegal power grab by the federal government, and doesn't see it ending there.

"When you think about it, the federal government is taking over the banking institutions. They're taking over industry. It's scary. I mean, what's next?" asks Ean, who last year ran together with her 19-year-old son for a state legislative seat. They both lost in the primary, but helped unseat the 13-term Republican incumbent.

People have arrived at this ideological destination by different routes. There's the substantial right-to-bear-arms crowd. Some want drug laws loosened. Others are focused on the economy and see government's hand as the source of the problems.

Still others get their hackles up over high taxes.

While more Free Staters lean Republican, there's little enthusiasm here for George W. Bush, whose administration is viewed as having broken promises to make government smaller. His Democratic replacement, meanwhile, draws backhanded applause — for waking people up with the pace of "centralizing everything."

With the early morning sun climbing fast, a handful of Free Staters crouch low in a gravel lot to test their resolve on distant targets. Shoulders tense, eyes focused down the length of .22-caliber rifles, they're trying to take out the "redcoats" with 13 bullets — one for each of the original colonies.

"This is what America is all about — individual freedom, less intrusive government, self-reliance," says gunsmith Tony Stelik, a political refugee from 1980s' Communist Poland. "Now it's rulers are trying to change it."

Down to her last target, shooter Alicia Lekas nails it, although she seems an unlikely citizen soldier. Lekas makes a living teaching Scottish folk dancing. Her America is embodied in a story of the time a tree fell on a friend's house near Concord and, instead of waiting for government, neighbors responded with their own chain saws.

She says she can't imagine shooting a living creature, but she'll do it if the need arises.

"A bad guy might be the individual crook," the new rifleman says, "Or it might be somebody who's taken over government."

Either way, she's ready.

To America's Youth: A Few Bits of Wisdom

Since tomorrow is the day we celebrate our independence from the tyrannical rule of Britain, I thought it appropriate to remind the youth of today of the ideals our Founding Fathers sacrificed so much for. I've elaborated a bit on some things that are being forgotten by or just not being taught to the generation that will one day inherit this great country. Please feel free to pass it on to them.

To the Youth of America:

You live in the greatest country on Earth. While we have our faults and we make mistakes, we are unparalleled in our ideals and principles. You continue to be a part of the greatest experiment for any country in the history of mankind. Be proud.

The Founding Fathers of this country put pen to paper 233 years ago to declare this nation's independence from England and allow for this country to determine its own destiny. Be proud.

They determined that the rights of the citizens of this nation come from God, not man. Despite what you are told, there is no separation of church and state. The Founders meant that government shall not establish an official government religion, not that you can't put a nativity scene on the steps of city hall. Government will not be there in your darkest hour of need; God will be. Believe.

Your freedom of speech does NOT mean that you are free to say what you will without consequence. This freedom comes with great responsibility, and, sometimes, there are negative consequences to what we say. That does NOT mean that government has the right to determine what is "hate speech" and to try and stop it. A quote I've always loved is: "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend with my dying breath your right to say it." Live it and be proud.

Respect life. Children are a gift from God, not a "mistake" as our President would have you believe. Life begins at conception, and only God can determine whether that life becomes part of this world or not. Unplanned pregnancies are a consequence of decisions you make. Do not destroy innocent life to eliminate that consequence. Instead, think about what consequences could come from your decisions. Learn from that.

Happiness is a state of mind. When you encounter adversity in this life, look for any positive aspect, no matter how small. That will encourage you to try again instead of giving in to defeat. The Founding Fathers knew adversity, yet they were determined to make this the greatest nation ever. Follow their example.

Do not fall into the "politically correct" mindset. Realize that people have come from all different walks of life to unite as a citizenry. While respecting their diverse backgrounds, do not lose sight of yours. Have respect for the feelings of others, but do not fear standing on your principles. Use the moral compass God gave you. Be proud of who you are.

Study the history of this country. Vow to never let the ideals that the Founders set forth 233 years ago be for naught. There are those who will label you a "hater" or tell you that you are intolerant and uncaring. Do not fear this. Instead, listen to the voices of 233 years ago and carry on. It won't always be easy, but greatness never is.

Pursue your dreams. You will encounter setbacks, but forge ahead. This nation was founded on dreams and is a great example of what can be. Stay focused.

I'm going to leave you with the story of what was sacrificed so that you may be free. Ask yourselves one question: What would I be willing to sacrifice?

The Price They Paid

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.

Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor."

May all of us remember and celebrate this sacred day, and may God bless each and every one of us and this great nation.

The New York Times missed the opportunity to publish a great op-ed letter to President Obama from Lou Pritchett, a former vice president of Procter & Gamble who worked for that company for 36 years until his retirement in 1989. So I thought I'd give his letter a little press through my syndicated column, and add a few more thoughts of my own.

Mr. Pritchett confirmed via Snopes that he was the author of the "open letter to President Obama": "I did write the 'you scare me' letter. I sent it to the NY Times but they never acknowledged or published it."

I think you'll readily see why any Left-leaning newspaper won't run it. Here's a copy:

Dear President Obama:

You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.

You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.

You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.

You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America, and culturally you are not an American.

You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.

You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core.

You scare me because you lack humility and "class," always blaming others.

You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail.

You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the "blame America" crowd and deliver this message abroad.

You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.

You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.

You scare me because you prefer "wind mills" to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.

You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.

You scare me because you have begun to use "extortion" tactics against certain banks and corporations.

You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.

You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.

You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.

You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.

You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaughs, Hannitys, O'Reillys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view.

You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.

Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.

Thank you, Mr. Pritchett, for your love for America, honesty and willingness to risk your reputation by speaking up to this administration.

Now let me add a few of my own fears to yours.

President Obama:

You scare me because so many amazing corporate and American leaders like Lou Pritchett say things about you like: 'You scare me.'"

You scare me because, after you initiate more government borrowing and bailouts than all presidents combined, you require Congress to follow a system that is "pay-as-you-go."

You scare me because you really do believe that going into massive amounts of debt can remedy our economy in the long run.

You scare me because you repeatedly still play the blame game with the Bush administration but never blame the Clinton administration, even though it was responsible for the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac subprime fiasco via the proliferation of loans to low income unqualified borrowers.

You scare me because you buy and run banking, automobile and soon health industries with taxpayers' money but refuse to call it socialism.

You scare me because your actions don't reflect the federal governmental constraints and fiscal prudent principles of our Founding Fathers and Constitution.

You scare me because you promise to lead from the center but drive hard and fast to the Left.

You scare me because you claim to be a fighter for minorities and constitutional promises of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, yet what greater minority can be defended than those in the womb, against whom you have already enacted more pro-abortion-related laws than anyone since Roe v. Wade?

You promise to defend the U.S. against all potential enemies, yet you pacify those who harbor terrorists, fight for the rights of combative detainees, and enable the enemies of Israel.

You scare me because you deny America's Judeo-Christian heritage before other countries of the world, espousing "the promise of a secular nation" during an age in which religious revisionism is already on the rise. (Thank God for Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Va., and others, who are even now trying to preserve America's religious history by proposing the passage of the Spiritual Heritage Bill 397 – call or write your representative today to support it).

You scare me because your media team (including the mainstream media) will seek to label as radical, quarantine socially or in some way penalize any opposing conservative voices (like conservative talk-show hosts, news agencies, columnists or fellow actors like Jon Voight).

You scare me because, as we've all watched over your first 100 days in office, you can get away with all these things mentioned above, and the mainstream media and most of the public will continue to hail you as king.

You scare me because your media team will not address or diminish in any way your deification before the world, epitomized by the editor of Newsweek, who was on MSNBC's Chris Matthews' show and recently stated, "I mean, in a way Obama's standing above the country, above the world. He's sort of God." (How much scarier can it get than representative statements like that in a republic that once stood for equity among political powers and a government "by the people and for the people"?)

America, it's time to awaken from your slumber and quit looking to the government for answers, and start looking to real reputable sources. I recommend starting with Lou Pritchett's 1995 business book, "Stop Paddling & Start Rocking the Boat."
