In a speech in Vienna, Bibi did put stipulations on the move. He said that the Palestinian refugees would have to give up the idea of returning to Israel and recognize Israel as a state.
With those conditions, he said, he could accept "a demilitarized Palestinian state alongside the Jewish state."
The West Bank-based Palestinian government dismissed the proposal.
How sad that it has come to this. Netanyahu had two options:
- Refuse to call for a Palestinian state. This would mean that the backing of the U.S. in a conflict would be iffy. Thanks, Barry!
- Call for the formation of a Palestinian state. Bibi did the right thing by attaching conditions to his acceptance of Palestine. This way, he can honestly say to Obama "I did what you wanted.", but on Bibi's own terms. Brilliant!
