Beware the Constitutional Convention

I got an email from the United States Justice Foundation via newsmax.com warning of what could be the scariest thing we've seen yet: a Constitutional Convention. If this information is true, we may be on the verge of a total takeover.

The only Constitutional Convention ever held was in 1787. The Founding Fathers met to give us a representative republic, as they felt (and rightfully so) that a pure democracy gave too much power to the masses. The Electoral College and checks and balances were put in place to evenly distribute power among the three branches of government and to guard against tyranny by mob rule.

According to Article V of the Constitution, it takes three-quarters of the states to approve any changes to the most precious document written next to the Bible. In those days, it was 9 out of the 13 original colonies. Today, 34 states would have to sign on to convening a Constitutional Convention. Many have the number of states in agreement at 32.

Should a Con Con be called, delegates from each state would be sent to the convention with the purpose of scrapping the Constitution of 1787 and starting over. Imagine the ramifications that would have considering the current occupant of the White House.

The First Amendment: gone. No more free speech for you. It would be touted as necessary to guard against viscious, hateful words coming from those who dare disagree with policy. And freedom of religion? HAH! You will be able to choose only from those religions the government would approve of. We'd all be sitting either in the front pew at Reverend Wright's church or in a mosque.

The Second Amendment: gone. We couldn't have an armed citizenry, now, could we? They might use them against those who wish to bring peace and harmony to this land. And how could the law be enforced if officers have to worry about being met with a firearm? No need for self-defense when the only ones with guns are the government, eh?

The Fourth and Fifth Amendments: gone. Your rights against illegal search and seizure and your rights against self-incrimination would cease to exist. They could take what they want when they want, and a warrant would not be required to search your property for whatever reason they deem worthy.

The Tenth Amendment: gone. States would no longer be allowed to declare their sovereignty over those issues not spelled out as Federal Powers in the Constitution. States would only be lines on a map.

Make no mistake about it. If a Con Con were held today, abortion, euthanasia, affirmative action and gay marriage would all become constitutional rights. The left would guarantee it. Also, no need to worry about that pesky 22nd Amendment that limits a president to two terms. It would vanish like cockroaches in the light.

I plan on keeping an eye on this, and I advise everyone else to keep an ear to the ground. Given this administration's track record, it would not surprise me if this is being considered. Please pray that this never happens. Stay vigilant.

Funny you brought this up today. I speculated on what a new Constitution would be like if the fools running the country today were to rewrite it. I didn't paint a rosy picture either.

I doubt a new Constitution would ever be ratified, but then again, the federal goverment pulled of the income tax amendment in a very shady way which some believe didn't get the 3/4 of the states needed to ratify the amendment, not to mention most of the Senate had left for Christmas break but the Senate was never actually dismissed.

Great minds, Clay!!!

Think about it: The entire northeast, the entire left coast, and possibly Florida. How many states is that? It might be easier than anyone would think.

This is scary to think about B & G!
I sure hope it doesn't come to pass, or we
are even more screwed than we are now.

Amen, sista!!! Let's not let our guard down!

I've heard discussion about this in the recent past. While you bring to light some of the more scary possibilities, there are still too many conservative people out here in flyover country, and they'll (God help us) never try to pull some of the extremes you discuss.

The one thing that comes up too many times, that will protect us? Term limits on Congress. They can't stand the though of losing their own power.

Soloman: Welcome!! I would hope that you're correct in your assessment that there are enough of us to never let a Con Con happen. The worry I have is that there are those in power who have shown a blatant disregard for the will of the people, and if they'd see a crisis, they wouldn't want it to go to waste.

Term limits are definitely needed. Originially, the Founders intended for members of Congress to only serve two years to avoid becoming career politicians. My how times have changed!

Thanks for reading!

I have been silently watching this too. Until it happens and we see what the states want , it is a non issue. There aren't enough liberal states to push an agenda you speak of. FLorida IS NOT A LIBERAL STATE!!!!! We have liberal sections, which have shrunk since the hurricanes.

Speaking of hurricanes, I don't know how far inland you live but there may be one ( a very big bad one) heading for the NE U.S. Keep an eye on it it is Bill I think. It could hit the whole eastern seaboard.

Joel: I honestly did NOT mean to imply that Florida as a whole is a liberal state. When I mentioned it, I was thinking about how many voting groups who support Obama are in Florida. Illegals, retirees from heavily Democratic states, etc.

I'm not sure I agree 100% with the point you made about there not being enough liberal states to push through a radical leftist agenda. Iowa, a normally red state, has enacted gay marriage. Colorado has also become a bastion of liberal ideology. To me, that represents a disturbing trend.

I hope you stay safe in wake of the hurricane trifecta that could hit Florida. I will definitely keep an eye on Bill. We're about 6 hours from the coast, but we've gotten hurricane rain before.

Take care!!!

Before anyone buys into the material here printed politically, a word of warning. This may be a scam using the name of USJF to get money.

At FOAVC we track announcements like this and for the last week we've been getting this email. Naturally we checked it out. For reference all 50 states have submitted 750 applications for a convention. Obama is on public record opposing a convention as is Pelosi and Reid. All of these documented facts can be found at our site including the actual texts of the applications at www.foavc.org.

But that is not the main purpose of this response. As I said FOAVC checks things out. We've gone to the USJF web page. There is not one mention of a convention or any position on it on that site. Second, the link to the "donation" page does not match the donation page at that site meaning the URL is different that what is at the USJF site.

It may be that USJF does oppose a convention. But if they do they haven't stated on their official website and if you notice all the links go to the "donation" page rather than to the USJF website as would ordinarily be expected.

You are free to oppose a convention if you wish and it's your money but I'd advise being real cautious about this.

Bill: Thanks for the warning. I'm very cautious with my money as most people are.

Thanks for all of the info. I appreciate it!

It's a shame that they seem to be so shady about soliciting donations. Gives those of us who are truly concerned about today's political atmosphere a bad taste in our mouths.
