Memo in Atlanta: Vote Black

Atlanta, Georgia, is on the verge of having a white mayor. What makes it newsworthy is the fact that every mayor since 1973 has been black. To counter this possibility, an email has been circulated within the black community urging the “critical importance of electing a black mayor at all costs” over a white candidate in November's election. That statement in and of itself is racist, yet we hear nothing but crickets from those who claim to be staunch fighters for equality.

The email is being attributed to the Black Leadership Forum, a group that has insisted that the status quo be maintained in Atlanta since Maynard Jackson was elected mayor of the city in 1973. Aaron Turpeau, a political consultant, has admitted to helping distribute the email. He cites fears that some blacks are fearful that they'll receive fewer city contracts if a white mayor is elected.

Atlanta Councilwoman Mary Norwood, the only white candidate for the mayoral position, has a good chance of winning, holding 30% of the votes among the five candidates in a recent Insider Advantage poll. Black candidate Lisa Borders is the only black candidate being endorsed in the email because “she is the best black candidate in the race who has a chance to win the election because she can attract downtown white support.”

Race baiting is nothing new as we have seen numerous times in the past. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Louis Farrakhan have made it their careers. If they were to admit that the kind of racism they say exists really doesn't, they're scanning the want ads for a job. So that means that their sole mission in this world is to concoct racism where there is none. I would offer that they are the racists due to the fact that they seem to feel that the black community as a whole isn't intelligent enough to make a decision regarding their choice for government representation based on the issues.

By now, experience has taught us how this situation would be handled should the KKK have distributed an email urging people to "Vote white at all costs." Said race-baiting poverty pimps (Jackson, Sharpton, et al) would be taking to the airwaves to decry such a tactic. And the MSM would gladly give them the airtime to do so. They said McCarthy was paranoid about Communism. No, he was right. If Jackson and Sharpton are looking for racists, they only need look in the mirror.

When one votes for a candidate based on the color of that candidate's skin, it is just as racist as voting against a candidate based on skin color.

Gee...I wonder what happened last time people voted for a candidate based solely on the fact that he's black...

That is stunning that Atlanta may have a white mayor. Is that an an indicator that having Obama as a horrible president has made at least the segment of the 'black population" that has common sense woke them up to the concept that having someone with your skin color in office doesn't mean squat if they do a horrible job and their bad job causes you to lose your job? It sounds like the Obama effect may be a negative one even in Atlanta which is the blackest of black communities.

I think "The Obama Effect" could have a big impact everywhere. I've also read that cities like Baltimore and Gary, IN, are also close to electing white mayors. I feel that it's not necessarily due to skin color as a Democratic backlash. This is going to be one interesting political season!

That's very interesting that Atlanta may elect a white mayor. It still stuns me how people who say they want to end racism, promote it, and make the most out of the race issue or race card. We, conservatives believe in all people being created equal. But, somehow these loons try to paint us out to be the racists. You are oh so correct in saying people like Jackson and Sharpton need look no further than in the mirror to find a racist.

Hey Teresa! I'm sure there are people out there who will see this as a black/white issue, but it won't be the conservatives/libertarians making it an issue of race. It disgusts me how race is so often interjected into an argument from the left. They forget that it was mostly the Democrats who opposed the civil rights legislation of the 1960's and that Dr. King was a Republican.

Given that we have a $50 million deficit here, perhaps it's about time we embrace "hope and change" in Coldlanta (and, really, on any given day this place is about as frigid as a polar bear's business parts in the dead of a cooling climate event).

Dr. Dave: You are just too funny, dude.

I've been THROUGH Atlanta once while driving to Florida. Have avoided that city like the plague ever since. It was a nightmare!

Driving Atlanta is not for the faint hearted. Still Atlanta is one of the most unique cities in the "South". I think of Atlanta as Miami without the Islander element. You think Atlanta is bad to drive, I dare you to try Miami.

You are right about us having issue with race. Those on the other side and younger than 30 need to learn that "having a pres with MY skin color" or "voting in the first black president" are not what matters and a round of suffering is needed to break the racial and "academically liberal" ties.

Great Post BNG. Simply stunning. I go to ATL quite a bit for work. It is an interesting place to say the least.

Great Comments everyone.

Andrew: Definitely not brave enough to drive Miami. I'll leave that to the experts.

I hope that one day the youth of today will truly overlook color when it comes to politics.
